My Favorite Things – In Anticipation of Easter (A High Carb Post)

My mom, and my husband and I went to the West Side Market in Cleveland yesterday to purchase ingredients for our Easter dinner.  The market is one of my favorite places to visit whenever I’m in Northeast Ohio and I’ve written about it before on my blog here.  Yesterday’s shopping list was actually short – just 4 ingredients – but that didn’t stop us from walking every aisle and taking time out to enjoy a Frank’s Bratwurst sandwich.

And although we already gave each other Easter baskets (sometimes you just gotta start celebrating early), I’ve decided that I’m getting all of these goodies next year!

Decompressing…The Really Healthy Way!

After what’s been pretty much a whirlwind fall for me, I’m beginning to decompress a little now.  In fact, I’ve escaped the city for a little TLC and relaxation at the best five star accommodation I know… chez My Parents.  It’s quiet and peaceful here, and to top it off, today we even went apple picking!

For those of you who need a little vicarious decompressing, here’s a good dose of healthy for you…

(By the way, it took us a whopping total of 5 minutes to pick a bushel of the red Melrose apples…an honest day’s work in my new playbook!)

My Favorite Things – Having My Camera With Me at the Perfect Moment

This past weekend I visited my parents in Oberlin, Ohio.  Peaceful and quiet is an understatement when it comes to describing Oberlin.  You’re more likely to hear a student practicing the bagpipes (we did) than the honking of car horns or police sirens.  On a day to day basis, not much happens in town, so imagine my surprise and delight when I not only spied two vintage German automobiles, but also happened to have my camera with me!

They were just about to drive away…

But he couldn’t figure out how to put it in reverse.

The driver of the blue auto hopped out to give some advice…

While I ran around the back to get a picture of the dashboard.

Mr. Black Beret was very friendly…

And offered to get out so that I could have a seat.

Having mastered reverse, Mr. Black Beret put the car in gear and sped away (not exactly, but apparently these cars can do 62 mph!)

Bye!

My Favorite Things (Saturday Special) – A Trip to Cleveland’s West Side Market

A trip to visit my parents in Ohio is not complete without a visit to Cleveland’s West Side Market.  Dating back to 1840, this exuberant and colorful market is home to over 100 ethnically diverse vendors who sell everything from fruits and vegetables to meats, fish, dairy and home-baked goods.

From the 2nd floor hallway, the bird’s-eye view gave me a head-start for planning my shopping today.

The meats looked good…

And the butcher(ess?) added some local color.

I drooled over the homemade gnocchi…

And pastas…

Before moving on to ogle the bread…

And the cheese.

I like my martinis up, shaken, not stirred, and garnished with olives.  This is about the right number.

I’m also a popcorn fiend, both savory and sweet.  With Campbell’s “Dichotomy Corn” you can have it both ways.

A meal just isn’t balanced without fruits and veggies, so I left the indoor portion of the market to see what was fresh outside.  It’s almost prime asparagus season, and these looked good!

So did the citrus…

The plums…

And the grapes.

The raspberries, blackberries and starfruit caught my eye, so I bought some of each.

Meanwhile, a charming young lady named Gwen came over to ask if I was a photographer.  Does trying to capture and share beauty with others count?
