A Design a Day – Day 84

Yesterday I posted a yellow gold and diamond brooch which was inspired from my sketch of a deer.  After finishing that rendering and having a little distance from it, I realized that I made some design changes to my original sketch as I was painting.   While the end result was interesting, I decided to go back and re-render the brooch keeping more faithful to my original sketch.  And, to continue to hone my skills, I painted the brooch this time in white metal (rendering large expanses of white metal is harder than rendering gold.)  Here is the brooch in its new version:

Watercolor and Gouache White Metal and Diamond "Ribbon" Brooch by Joana Miranda

I’d love to hear feedback from my readers on which version you think is more successful as a design!

  1. I really liked the gold version, but after seeing the white metal version, I admit I prefer it to the yellow gold. The square edges resemble the hooves of the deer more than the pointed ones. Actually, the yellow gold version looks like an octopus gliding, I think, with the shape of the “legs”! BOTH are beautiful…I am just more of a white metal person. 🙂

    • Hi Erin,

Thanks for the feedback! I, too love the richness of the gold version, but I think that the white metal variation has a more graceful “deer-like” quality to it. (In addition to the gold design being reminiscent of a “gliding octopus” as you pointed out, I also think it looks a little like a banana!) 😉 Joana

  2. I’m going with the white metal version as more successful, and here’s why: the deer has now transformed into a tied length of ribbon, and the white metal version looks more convincingly like ribbon, because of the way the ribbon ends are “cut”. The yellow version’s “ribbon ends” look more like tulip petals than ribbon. Am I making any sense?

    • I agree! So far the yellow version has been compared to a “gliding octopus”, a “banana” (my contribution) and, now, your “tulip petals”. Fun to see through the eyes of others…:-)

      Joana
