This was the view outside our balcony this morning as I wrapped up work on the 32nd week of the Empire Building Kit…beautiful, if not a little bleak. Bleak summed up my mood as well, so I found the wisdom of profiled Emperor-in-training Jamie Ridler particularly apropos. Regarding building your own business and following your dream she said…
- You don’t have to know everything before you start; in fact, you can’t
- It will likely take longer than you expect
- Let people help
- Do it “your way” not “the way”
- Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Reading this list was a good wake up call; in fact, maybe Jamie was thinking of me when she wrote these reminders! I’m not patient with myself, nor am I always kind to myself, either. (This week has seen several teary outbursts of “I’m a failure!”, as well as sleepless nights where I toss and turn worrying about everything that could go wrong in my life.) Morning comes and I plunge myself back into work, hardly allowing myself do-nothing-time or, God forbid, a nap.
To be honest, I’m not good with being uncomfortable, either. As much as I hate to admit it, I’d rather go with the “devil I know” than risk failing at pursuing my dreams. Right now, in a way, I’m actually blessed that the economy stinks, since my easy fall-back options are just not available to me at this point.
Celebrate? What’s that? I hail from the school of “do your chores first, then you can play.” Problem is, my chore list seems to be infinite. So, too, are my expectations.
And, guess what? I’m also not so good with asking people to help when it really matters. So, with an eye towards developing an ever increasing sense of awareness and personal growth (balls?), not to mention business growth, I’m going out on a limb to ask for your help here. Helping with any one of the things below will give me a good reason to celebrate. Please…
