My Favorite Things (Saturday Special) – A Trip to Cleveland’s West Side Market

A trip to visit my parents in Ohio is not complete without a visit to Cleveland’s West Side Market.  Dating back to 1840, this exuberant and colorful market is home to over 100 ethnically diverse vendors who sell everything from fruits and vegetables to meats, fish, dairy and home-baked goods.

From the 2nd floor hallway, the bird’s-eye view gave me a head-start for planning my shopping today.

The meats looked good…

And the butcher(ess?) added some local color.

I drooled over the homemade gnocchi…

And pastas…

Before moving on to ogle the bread…

And the cheese.

I like my martinis up, shaken, not stirred, and garnished with olives.  This is about the right number.

I’m also a popcorn fiend, both savory and sweet.  With Campbell’s “Dichotomy Corn” you can have it both ways.

A meal just isn’t balanced without fruits and veggies, so I left the indoor portion of the market to see what was fresh outside.  It’s almost prime asparagus season, and these looked good!

So did the citrus…

The plums…

And the grapes.

The raspberries, blackberries and starfruit caught my eye, so I bought some of each.

Meanwhile, a charming young lady named Gwen came over to ask if I was a photographer.  Does trying to capture and share beauty with others count?

  3. Hi Pam,

Thanks so much! The West Side Market is one of my favorite spots in Ohio. Now that I live (and love living) in NY, it’s not such a surprise why I’ve always loved that market. It’s always packed with people, you hear every language under the sun, and you can find just about every type of ethnic food you’d ever want to eat.

Gwen was a cutie! I gave her my blog card and hope that she visits my blog some time.

    Hope you are well!
    Joana

  4. I love markets like this one. The homemade gnocchi looks to die for! And here I thought only potato gnocchi was in existence! Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing your day with us! 🙂

    • Hi Bella,

The gnocchi and homemade pastas ARE good. However, my lunchtime treat at the West Side Market is the Bratwurst or smoked sausage sandwich on a hard roll with sauerkraut. There’s no where to sit down, so everyone stands around trying to eat their lunch without dropping it all over the floor.

      Thanks for visiting my blog!
      Joana

    • Hi Linda,

The market always puts me in a good mood…hard not to react favorably to all the wonderful smells, sights and energy!
