Although I love to share the stories behind my photos, I felt that this collection – taken from our recent trip to the island of Madeira, Portugal – speaks for itself.

Ah, so beautiful, luscious Madeira. I esp loved the lil old folks sign! Need to get that to put up outside my house! So much blue! Wonderful pix, pix!
I sure do love you, and you don’t need an old fogies sign…yet.;-)

Wow, is that hydrangea growing wild on the beach?
The hydrangea was growing up on the mountain top (wild), but I didn’t see any growing on any of the beaches. Madeira has an incredible climate, and because it’s got coast and mountains (and everything in between) the farmers can tailor what they grow to the varied geographical conditions of the islands. In other words, down near the ocean you have tropical fruits and veggies (lots of bananas!), but as you ascend into the mountains you get wine grapes, chestnuts, and lots of other fun things.
We actually were not there at the best time since it is hot and humid in late August and some of the flowers are at the end of their season; but even so being there was an exotic treat.

Your photos are stunning. Oh my, so love the standing woman under the umbrella, the window and pink building…oh to be there now.
Thanks so much, Susan! September into early October (now, basically) is one of the best times to be in Madeira. While I’m certainly not complaining, in late August when we were there it was fairly hot and surprisingly humid. I sort of expected fresher sea breezes, but then again the island is more on the latitude of Morocco than Lisbon.
I have some more pictures to post, but first need to get more into a rhythm with my illustrations again.
I hope you are well! Joana
