My Favorite Things – Cafe Dates with My Cartoon Friends

I do have real friends, actually, but sometimes it’s just as fun to take myself out to a cafe with my sketchbook for some people watching and cartoon friend creation.

Case in point, this past weekend I walked to the Upper West Side Maison Kayser

And ordered a cafe latte and a slice of flour-less chocolate cake.

It was a hopping time to be at Maison Kayser, so I had fun picking subjects to sketch.  A party of four arrived at the table across from mine a short time after I sat down.  I captured one of the gentlemen in the group perusing the menu…as you can see, people tend to look happy when they’re reading the menu at Maison Kayser

And I could imagine him thinking…

Oh dear, oh my, what to choose?

Everything’s good, so there’s nothing to lose.

My belly has room for dessert, of course,

Too bad the sugar will cause remorse.

Tuning out,

Is without a doubt,

The best course of action,

If you want a distraction.

This face tells a tale,

Of a curious male.

One side is sad,

The other side’s glad!

I sound long in the tooth,

When I kvetch about the youth.

So, instead I focus my eye

On the ones in a tie.

Her expression was sour,

For an early hour.

But her hat caught my eye,

So I sketched on the sly.

There was nothing slapdash

About his mustache.

Upon reflection,

He was styled to perfection.

From My Sketchbook – The Winter Blahs

Of course, I can never be sure what any of my subjects are thinking.  For sure, my own “winter blahs” have probably bled into this past week’s slightly glum sketches.  But sunny days (and a much need break) are just around the corner for me.  Look for some new cartoons to be emerging soon!
