Argentium Sterling Silver; Who’s Using It?

Detail photo of Convergence Classics Necklace by Joana MirandaAs many of my readers know, I use Argentium Sterling Silver in my hand-fabricated jewelry almost exclusively.  Why?  Because I love that it is highly tarnish resistant, and that while as malleable as traditional sterling silver when annealed, it can be made to be almost 2x the hardness of silver through a process of heat hardening.  I also like the way Argentium conducts heat when I solder with it.  Traditional silver alloys tend to conduct heat very quickly throughout the entire piece when heated with a soldering torch.  With Argentium, the heat dispersal is more contained so it is easier to solder adjacent delicate areas in a piece without risking components getting overheated, coming unsoldered or melting.

If you’d like to see some exceptional work of other jewelry artists using Argentium Sterling Silver, take a look at this wonderful gallery of photos (I’m honored to be included!)  You can also read more about the properties of Argentium Sterling Silver here.

New Work from JLM Studio – Wrapped in Elegance Bow and Pearl Drop Earrings

I recently hand-fabricated these delicate and feminine bow earrings in tarnish-resistant Argentium Sterling Silver with freshwater pearl drops.  I think they’d look pretty fabulous as bridal earrings…or, they could go with a black tie outfit just as well:

New Work from JLM Studio – Wrapped in Elegance Lariat-Style Necklace

I hand-fabricated this bow necklace as a faux lariat.  While I love the look of lariat necklaces, I don’t like how they tend to slip and slide as you wear them, one end pulling down until the other has formed a noose around your neck.  The two ends of this necklace are soldered in place on the backside of the bow, so you’ll always stay wrapped in elegance!Photo of Bow and Pearl Lariat-Style Necklace by Joana Miranda

New Custom Project From JLM Studio – Baobab Pendant with Bezel-Set Diamond

Those of you following my blog regularly may remember this rendering I posted back in May, 2009:

Watercolor and Gouache Rendering of Silver Baobab Tree Pendant with Diamond by Joana Miranda

I was commissioned to make the pendant recently for a client.  I hand-pierced the silver, hand-fabricated the outside frame, soldered the pierced portion inside the frame, and set the diamond in a hand-fabricated bezel.  I gave the piece a sand-blasted finish and high-polished the rim and bail for contrast.  Here is the finished piece:
