From My (Saratoga) Sketchbook – Rhymes and Doodles

Two birds of a feather,

On a bench together.

Looked a bit more grubby,

Than sweet lovey-dovey.

He knew it wasn’t new,

The view was déjà vu.

So he zoned instead,

Looking straight ahead.

From My Sketchbook – Rhymes and Doodles (From Afar)

I just visited Milwaukee,

Where the men were stocky.

Running around Manhattan,

Most people rarely fatten.

From My Sketchbook – On the Mend

After coming back from a bout with the flu last week, I dropped the ball on everything except for the very essentials.  Dragging myself to Lincoln Center to play the final week of Nutcracker shows with New York City Ballet was just about all I could handle.  And I confess I did more staring than sketching on my subway rides.  Probably because of my low energy, my subjects also look a little on the subdued side.  Hopefully, the coming week will see the end to what’s been a persistent cough and the return of more of my usual (manic – hah!) energy.

Here’s hoping!

From My Sketchbook – Bundle Up, It’s Cold Outside!

As a (stupid) youth, I refused to wear hats.  I thought they looked dorky and I also didn’t want to end up with the dreaded hat-head hair.  Now that I’m old and wise (decrepit?), I’ve realized that hats not only really do keep you warmer, but they also cover a multitude of hair sins…bad hair, bed-head, etc.  My fancy hat rotation currently includes 3 cloche style hats: one has a bow, another a red felt poppy, and the third, a sparkly rhinestone pin.  I also have a ski cap for grocery runs and a fancy grey beret with rhinestones for those “je ne sais quoi” days.

Maybe because I’ve finally wrapped my head around wearing hats – or, the other way around – I’m also drawn to sketching people with interesting hats.  (Note: for those of you still on the fence about wearing hats, I can tell you that hats are definitely IN in New York City right now.)

Here are a few ways that people are rocking their hats…

From My Sketchbook – Two Dearies and a Don Juan

The weather was all over the map this week in the Big Apple.  We had temps so cold that I started wondering if I shouldn’t pull out my ankle-length parka.  The cold snap (and it was over in a snap!) was followed by a balmy 70-degree day…and all through the madness I was busy riding the subway back and forth to Lincoln Center to play shows with ABT (hence another smattering of “subway sketches”).

I’m calling the following two sketches the Two Dearies…

While if this one lost the hoodie and donned a cape, he might just be Don Juan!

From My Sketchbook – The Long and Short of It

These days as I’m looking for subjects to sketch, I usually go for the more interesting and unusual face types.  As you can see from the sketches below, my subject’s faces this week ranged from long, to rectangular and even slightly squat-shaped.   (I’m pleased to say that as I sketched the woman with the sunglasses and leopard print coat below, a fellow passenger watched from over my shoulder and gave me a big smile and a thumb’s up.)
