My Favorite Things – After the Storm

(I’m using the term both literally and figuratively.)

Here’s what it looked like around here yesterday…

And, today, after the storm passed.

Much like the storm, my illness of the past few months now seems nicely behind me.  While small clouds of anxiety still blow over my mood now and then, I’ve learned that there is always a blue sky above those clouds and that I can survive the moods just like I can survive the weather.

For that I am surpremely grateful.

How about you?  What are you grateful for today?

My Favorite Things – A Perfect Fall Day

Because being out in the sun and crisp fresh air will cure just about any blues!

Here’s what Central Park is looking like this week…

My Favorite Things – A Stroll Across the Brooklyn Bridge at Sunset

The Brooklyn Bridge isn’t really in “my neck of the woods”, but walking it is one of my favorite things to do with out-of-town guests when they visit.  With my Portuguese cousins today I lucked out not only with the weather, but with the timing of our walk.

As we started out, the sun was beginning to set…

And the buildings behind us softened in the late afternoon light.

The Empire State Building was majestically framed within the arch of the Manhattan bridge…

While on a more human level rusty locks clasped onto the struts of the bridge served as reminders of promises and hopeful wishes.

Every time I cross the bridge I am awed by this majestic span…

And the intricacies of its construction.

How lucky that I can call this city my home!

My Favorite Things – My Fair City

As a resident of the Big Apple for just under four years, I don’t suppose it’s fair to call it “my” fair city.  But it does feel that way to me.  In fact, I now find it hard to imagine living anywhere else!   New York is a city of neighborhoods – a melting pot of people from all walks of life – and a veritable feast of sounds, smells and sights.

After all, where else can you look up to see this…

And look DOWN to see this…

(P.S. The Observatory views at the Empire State building are still worthwhile on a cloudy day.)

My Favorite Things – A Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge

Ever since we moved to New York City, I’ve been wanting to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.  I finally convinced my husband this past Monday to do it.   The weather was perfect – not too cold or windy – and the morning fog was  just beginning to lift.   Since the views are better if you’re walking on the bridge towards Manhattan, we took the subway to the Brooklyn side, then walked back across the bridge to Manhattan.  (Our reward at the end of the journey was a trip to the Doughnut Plant in nearby Chinatown; however, there are no pictorial records of what we ate since we scarfed down the doughnuts too quickly.)

This is what we saw as we walked across the bridge…
