From My Sketchbook – Rhymes and Doodles

Her expression was sour,

For an early hour.

But her hat caught my eye,

So I sketched on the sly.

From My Sketchbook

There was nothing slapdash

About his mustache.

Upon reflection,

He was styled to perfection.

From My Sketchbook – My Peeps

Yes, these days my “peeps” – or the people I’m drawn to sketch – are the ones with unusual expressions and, often, quirky outfits.  Don’t get me wrong; I’ll still admire the rare specimen with the perfectly proportioned face, luminescent skin, elegant figure, and beautiful clothes.  But artistically speaking, it’s the humanity in the rest of us mortals that catches my attention and inspires me.  (Not to mention that there is charm and often humor in that which is unique.)

From My Sketchbook – Picking Up the Pieces

For those of you fans who also happen to be my musician friends, I know you understand the stress of preparing for an audition.  And I know you’ll sympathize and be able to relate as I sit here scratching my head tonight after not having advanced in the audition I took today.  It’s one thing to not advance after feeling like you didn’t play well…entirely another when you know you pretty much did your best (hence the head scratching!)  Fortunately, I do have a very good network of supportive friends and family, and my imaginary friends (see below) are calling as well.

And, as I begin to pick up the pieces and get back to my creative endeavors, I’m inspired to share this piece of wisdom…

“There is no innovation and creativity without failure. Period.”

From My Sketchbook – Back At It

I had noble intentions – i.e. lots of sketching – for the 10 days between the New York City Ballet Nutcracker run ending and the winter season starting.  Sadly, beyond forcing myself to practice every day (I have an audition coming up) and squeezing in some daily exercise time, I pretty much dropped the ball on everything else.   I was still recovering from having been sick, so I guess my lack of energy shouldn’t have come as a surprise.  After all, sometimes doing nothing is just what the doctor ordered, I guess.  Now I’m back to commuting to rehearsals and shows, which means I have some enforced people-watching sketching time.

Here’s what my fellow commuters looked like this past weekend…

From My Sketchbook – On the Mend

After coming back from a bout with the flu last week, I dropped the ball on everything except for the very essentials.  Dragging myself to Lincoln Center to play the final week of Nutcracker shows with New York City Ballet was just about all I could handle.  And I confess I did more staring than sketching on my subway rides.  Probably because of my low energy, my subjects also look a little on the subdued side.  Hopefully, the coming week will see the end to what’s been a persistent cough and the return of more of my usual (manic – hah!) energy.

Here’s hoping!

From My Sketchbook – Bundle Up, It’s Cold Outside!

As a (stupid) youth, I refused to wear hats.  I thought they looked dorky and I also didn’t want to end up with the dreaded hat-head hair.  Now that I’m old and wise (decrepit?), I’ve realized that hats not only really do keep you warmer, but they also cover a multitude of hair sins…bad hair, bed-head, etc.  My fancy hat rotation currently includes 3 cloche style hats: one has a bow, another a red felt poppy, and the third, a sparkly rhinestone pin.  I also have a ski cap for grocery runs and a fancy grey beret with rhinestones for those “je ne sais quoi” days.

Maybe because I’ve finally wrapped my head around wearing hats – or, the other way around – I’m also drawn to sketching people with interesting hats.  (Note: for those of you still on the fence about wearing hats, I can tell you that hats are definitely IN in New York City right now.)

Here are a few ways that people are rocking their hats…
